31 Passengers Kidnapped By Insurgents In Myanmar’s Western State

YANGON, Oct 13 (NNN-MNA) – Some 31 passengers have been kidnapped from an express bus, by an insurgent group, in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, said police Sunday.

The passengers, including 19 Fire Department personnel and 12 civilians, were abducted by the Arakan Army (AA) from the Shwepyitha express bus, on Mrauk U-Sittway road, in Mrauk U township.

When the bus stopped for a man in civilian cloth at the roadside signalling the bus to stop, 18 armed men emerged from the forest and took away the 31 passengers into the forest.

Nearly 200 Human Trafficking Cases Exposed Across Myanmar In Nine Months

YANGON, Oct 2 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar police have exposed a total of 191 human trafficking cases across the country, in the first nine months of this year, according to figures released by the Anti-Trafficking Police Force today (Wednesday).

From Jan to Sept this year, 556 traffickers were charged in connection with the cases and 279 people were victimised.

Altogether 25 people, including seven children, were victimised while 54 traffickers were charged, in connection with 15 human trafficking cases in Sept alone.

Over 20 displaced persons return to Myanmar from Bangladesh

YANGON, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Some 27 displaced persons have returned to Myanmar from Bangladesh, arriving at a reception camp in Maungtaw, Rakhine state, according to the immigration authorities Monday.

The displaced people, who returned on their own wishes, made up of 14 families including some children. They were received at the Nga Khu Ya reception center last week.

Myanmar army says to punish soldiers in Rohingya atrocities probe

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar’s army will court-martial soldiers after a new finding in an inquiry into atrocities in Rakhine state, from which more than 730,000 Rohingya Muslims fled a 2017 army-led campaign the United Nations says was executed with “genocidal intent”.

On Saturday, the website of Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing said a military court that visited the northern state found soldiers had shown “weakness in following instructions in some incidents” at a village said to have been a Rohingya massacre site.

Myanmar's gov't, armed groups issue joint communique on ceasefire

YANGON, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Representatives of Myanmar government's National Reconciliation and Peace Center (NRPC) and four ethnic armed groups issued a joint communique late on Saturday following their meeting in Kengtung, Shan state, earlier on the day.

The four armed groups are Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), Palaung State Liberation Front (PSLF) or Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), Myanmar National Truth and Justice Party (MNTJP) or Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the United League of Arakan(ULA) or Arakan Army (AA).

78 illegal Myanmar migrant workers repatriated from Thailand

YANGON, Aug 30 (NNN-Xinhua) — A total of 78 more illegal Myanmar migrant workers have been sent back to homeland from Thailand, Myanmar’s immigration authorities said on Friday.

The illegal migrant workers including six women were handed over by Thailand’s Immigration Department through Kawthoung border gate in southern Tanintharyi region on Wednesday evening.

They were expelled by the Thai authorities for being found with expired visas and without proper documents.

S. Korean president to pay state visit to Myanmar

YANGON, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in will pay a state visit to Myanmar soon at the invitation of his Myanmar counterpart U Win Myint, the Myanmar government said in a media announcement on Sunday.

Myanmar and S. Korea have been making efforts to enhance their economic and trade cooperation and have coordinated to establish an industrial zone for Korean companies investing in Myanmar.

Myanmar’s Military Academy Attacked By Militant Group

YANGON, Myanmar, Aug 15 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar’s Defence Services Technological Academy in Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay region, was attacked by an unidentified militant group, armed with heavy weapons on Thursday morning, said an official of the True News Information Team of the military.

The incident took place at about 05:00 a.m. local time, damaging parts of the academy.

Myanmar seizes illegal timbers in Yangon outskirts

YANGON, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities have seized 1.7 tons of illegal hardwood timbers in the outskirts of Yangon city, according to the Forest Department Sunday.

The seizure was made by the forest officials in Htaukkyant township, northern Yangon on Friday when a suspected car was intercepted with 35 pieces of illegal Pyingadoe hardwood being found.

However, the driver and his passenger fled the scene.

Township police is investigating into the case to arrest the suspects and charge them under the Forest Law.
